Perimenopause care for women who know something has changed
Irregular cycles, 3 a.m. wake-ups, new anxiety, brain fog, heavier periods or a shorter fuse can all begin years before your last period. Perimenopause is real, it is common, and you deserve a provider who takes it seriously.
What perimenopause is
Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause, when ovarian hormone production becomes irregular rather than simply lower. It most often begins in the 40s, though it can start in the late 30s, and typically lasts several years. Menopause itself is confirmed after 12 consecutive months without a period.
Because estrogen and progesterone can swing widely from month to month, a single blood test is often unhelpful in perimenopause. The Menopause Society and ACOG both note that the diagnosis is usually based on age, symptoms and changes in your cycle.
Symptoms we commonly evaluate
Many women are surprised by how broad the symptoms can be:
- Changes in cycle length, flow or predictability
- Sleep disruption and early-morning waking
- Anxiety, irritability or low mood that feels new
- Brain fog, word-finding trouble and reduced focus
- Hot flashes and night sweats
- Lower libido, vaginal dryness or discomfort
- Joint aches, fatigue and changes in weight or body composition
How perimenopause care works at Unpaused
Care begins with a full history and a conversation about what has changed. When labs are useful, they are ordered to rule out other causes such as thyroid disease, anemia or vitamin deficiencies, not to tell you whether your symptoms are 'allowed'.
Depending on your history, options may include hormone therapy, cycle-supporting progesterone, non-hormonal prescription therapies, and targeted sleep, nutrition and strength-training strategies. Every decision is made together.
